Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Sri Lanka. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, the island offers tranquil beaches, Greenery plantations, and sacred sights steeped in spirituality. With charming people, mysterious ruins and some of the best cuisine in the world, memories of it will be there with you all along. / Transfer to a Hotel in Colombo (Approx. 45 Min) / No meals included
Today we will visit the Dambulla’s famed rock cave temple. This iconic Sri Lankan landmark, is surrounded by spectacular Buddha-filled interior, which you will begin to notice long before you arrive in town. Despite its slightly commercial air, this remains an important holy place for the local people and should not be missed. Once you are satisfied here, we will jump on board our jeep and embark on our Minneriya/Kaudulla National Park Safari where you will get the change to see Sri Lanka's biggest land mammals: ELEPHANTS. / Included Activities: > Dambulla Cave Temple > Minneriya/Kaudulla National Park Safari / Breakfast Included
Rising dramatically from the central plains, the enigmatic rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka's single most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilisation, thought to be once the epicenter of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa. Today the power is in your hands. The early morning can either take you through the spellbinding vistas across mist-wrapped forests before reaching the top of Sigiriya, or you can get your climbing boots on and complete epic Pidurangala hike instead. A view from the top or a view from afar? In the evening, we will visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. / Included Activities: > Sigiriya Rock Fortress or Pidurangala Rock hike > Polonnaruwa / Breakfast Included
Trincomalee (Trinco) sits on one the world’s finest natural harbours. This historic city is old almost beyond reckoning, yet is home of the historic site of Gokana in the Mahavamsa (Great Chronicle), and the Shiva temple nestling at the top of Trikuta Hill. Most people just pass through the city on their way to the nearby beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli, but the town has some charm, plenty of history and an interesting melange of people. / Transfer to hotel and rest of the day at leisure / Breakfast Included
Today's 5-hour activity offers you the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the biggest mammals in the world, the whales. Our guides are experts and will ensure that you have a successful whale / dolphin watching experience. Today you will begin to learn more about the whales that inhabit Sri Lankan waters and hopefully float alongside the playful local dolphins. PLEASE NOTE: even though todays whale watching is approx. 5 hours, this activity it is subject to change depending the weather, availability of Whales/Dolphins. The best time to see these mammals is from May to September. / Activities Included: > Whale Watching / Breakfast Included
As the sun rises, you will be transferred to the Knuckles Mountain Range that lies in central Sri Lanka. Hidden within the districts of Matale and Kandy, this mountain range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif, which resemble the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations within the Kandy District. After climbing up to your campsite, you will enjoy the stunning natural surroundings of the green district and cook up a storm by the fire. Tonight you will retire to your tents to sleep. (camping) / Breakfast and Dinner Included
An early morning rise will be met with a beautiful trek up to the Knuckles summit on a trail through tea plantation, pygmy forests, cloud forests, and plateau grasslands. Enjoy the panoramic view at the Knuckles Summit, before we head off to the Hill county’s capital Kandy. This evening observes locals worshiping in Kandy’s Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) - one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred shrines that houses a tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. Although withdrawing money from ATMs is a safe and convenient way to access money during your trip, we do recommend that you carry some money in cash for when ATMs can not be accessed. -----------------------------------------

Itinerary Changes:

While it is our intention to adhere to the route described below, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the itinerary, therefore, on occasions there may be some alternations. While we operate successful trips in this region throughout the year, some changes may occur in our itineraries due to inclement weather and common seasonal changes to timetables and transport routes. This can happen with little notice so please be prepared for modifications to the route. The order and timing of included activities in each location may also vary from time to time.

---------------

WEATHER:

Weather in Sri Lanka can vary depending on the time of year and part of Sri Lanka you are travelling to. The monsoon season is December to March in the northeast and May to October in the southwest. Flooding and landslides can occur during this time, so be ready for some delays in land travel or some reroutes to avoid affected areas.

Given the unpredictable nature of weather and travel, we are sometimes forced to make late itinerary changes due to unexpected heavy rain and/or storms and road closures. In the event of this occurring, itinerary changes may need to be implemented after commencement of you trip. In this event, your Tour guides have full authority to change the itinerary and/or order of activities and substitute alternative destinations and activities as necessary. No refunds are available due to itinerary changes and missed activities caused by extreme weather conditions and/or road closures.

---------------

CLIMATE & CLOTHING:

When packing be aware that dress standards are conservative throughout Asia, especially outside major cities. In Asia the dress standard is more conservative than it is back home. Try to pack loose, lightweight, long clothing that will keep you cool in the usually hot and humid climate of Asian summers. In predominately Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim countries we ask that you dress respectfully and avoid very short shorts/skirts and singlets/tanktops when visiting small rural communities or visiting temples or mosques or other holy sites as this may restrict your entry.

Sri Lanka is conservative and you should dress accordingly. As a general guideline shoulders and knees should be covered at all times. The wearing of shorts is not allowed as it will restrict your entry into buildings of a religious nature and family homes.

---------------

WATER BOTTLE:

Consider bringing your own water bottle to refill along the way. The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to the water in bottles, the production of a 1 litre plastic bottle takes 2 litres of water and 200ml of oil. A large proportion ends up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and natural environments. Although it can be difficult to avoid bottled water when travelling, please use the water dispensers which are provided at some of our accommodation or simply refill with tap water (your leader will advise whether tap water is safe to drink in your destination). When unable to avoid bottled water it is better to buy the largest available and distribute into your smaller bottle for the day.

---------------

ARRIVAL COMPLICATIONS:

We don't expect any problems, and nor should you, but if for any reason you are unable to commence your trip as scheduled, as soon as possible please contact GoKo Travels or your Tour leader on the numbers provided in the contact selection of this document (bottom).

If you are unable to get in touch with your with us via the details given on our website, please refer to our emergency contact details.

You do not need to pre-booked an airport transfer, as your tour leader will collect you from outside the airport and will take you to your Starting Point hotel.

PASSPORT AND VISAS

Passports and Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. All countries require a valid passport (with a minimum 6 months validity) and entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas. Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarise yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Tourism and government officials had approved a proposal to grant visa free entry to Sri Lanka, for multiple countries across the world, which was set to begin May 1st, 2019. Unfortunately, this service has been postponed in consideration of the current security situation.

Please check with the Sri Lanka Embassy or Consulate in your country for up-to-date visa information. Due to the hightened security threat, most nationalities will require a visa to visit Sri Lanka. The fee is approximately $35 USD and an E-Visa can be obtained at the following website:www.eta.gov.lk

For the most up to date information on visa requirements, we recommend you contact the Sri Lankan embassy in your country or visit the offical website.

** Note: Please ensure the name on your passport matches the name on your booking and airline tickets. Your passport details are required to complete your booking. Take a copy of the main passport pages and other important documents with you, and leave another copy at home with family or friends.

FLIGHTS AND TRAVEL INSURANCE

Flights:

GoKo Travels doesn't currently have the facilities to book your external/international flights. Therefore, you will have to prearrange your own flights to the required destination. We are always looking to improve our services, therefore, are planning to implement this solution as soon as possible.

---------------

Travel Insurance:

Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate on any of our trips. When travelling on a group trip, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance has been sighted by your Tour leader/ local representative, who will take note of your insurance details and emergency contact number.

This insurance must cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses and emergency repatriation with a recommended minimum coverage of US$200,000 for each of the categories of cover.

We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability of luggage, cancellation, curtailment and loss and personal effects. If you have credit card insurance we require proof of purchase of the trip (a receipt of credit card statement) with a credit card in your name. Contact your bank for details of their participating insurer, the level of coverage and emergency contact telephone number.

-----------------------------------------

MONEY

When it comes to spending money on the trip, every traveller is a little different. Some prefer to spend all their money on alcohol, whille other prefer souvenirs. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget a sensible amount for things like meals not included, drinks, shopping, optional activities and laundry. It's always better to bring a little more than you think you'll need. Also make sure you've read your trip details thoroughly so you know what's included in the trip price and what isn't. This should make budgeting a little easier.

---------------

MONEY EXCHANGE:

The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Rupee (LKR). For the latest exchange rate refer to https://www.xe.com

---------------

TIPPING:

Tipping is not expected but appreciated. Tipping is very important to the local people and inspires excellent serives so we highly reccomend you tip your guides/drivers/tour leaders if you are happ with the service.

The following amounts are per person suggestions based on local considerations and feedback from our past travellers:

Local guides: Throughout your trip you may at times have a local guide in addition to your tour leader. We suggest US$2-US$3 per day for local guides.

Drivers:  You wil be on a a private air conditioned bus throughout your journey, therefore we suggest you tip your driver $4-$5 per person per day.

Your Tour Leader: You may also consider tipping your tour leader if they provide an outstanding service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline US$5 - US$6 per person, per day can be used. Of course you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

In total, we recommend you budget approx US$10-US$12 per day of your trip to cover tipping.

---------------

CONTINGENCY FUNDS:

We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. Please make sure you have access to an extra GBP£300 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures).
